Carolina Valdés

I’m a performer, writer, and theatre maker.

I grew up in Barcelona, where I studied Journalism at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona and attended the Col.legi de Teatre for 3 years, which is where I understood what theatre could be.

I trained in Paris with Jacques Lecoq (1996-98), where I met Joseph Alford while he was staging a free interpretation of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ in miniature, on a stage the size of a big table. In 1999, we became Co-Artistic Directors of theatre O. I have co-created and performed in all of the company’s shows. Together, we have designed and delivered theatre workshops all over the world.

What I love most about my work is being inside of it and collaborating with others to create pieces that are born from the collective work done in the rehearsal room. I’m interested in working with stories with the human struggle (of any kind) at their centre and experimenting with form, mixing text, movement, film, and humour with craftsmanship and imagination.

In 2018, I was awarded a development grant by Arts Council England, which helped me explore and develop my possibilities as a writer. Since then, I have written a play (Sheriff) for theatre O and have had short stories published in Spain as part of an Anthology (El ruido de las lavadoras, ed.dosmanos) curated by writer Esmeralda Berbel.
Aside from theatre, I work extensively as an actor in theatre, film, and television, and as Movement Director in major UK theatres. My longstanding collaborations include work with Phyllida Lloyd in the Shakespeare Trilogy project, with filmmaker Daria Martin, writer and theatre maker Jonathan Young, and composer Melanie Wilson.

In the past 10 years, a lot of my work has had a strong social component, and I’m passionate about continuing to explore how theatre intersects with the real world. In this field, my most significant involvement has been with The School Theatre Project; creating and delivering a brand-new curriculum to introduce theatre into all state schools in Saudi Arabia (2022-24). I also work with ATT (Active Training Team) as an actor and facilitator to explore and manage behaviour in the context of the construction industry.

I have an ongoing involvement in education and have taught at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, and Guildford Drama School, amongst others. I love languages and am fluent in Spanish, Catalan, French, and English, and I’m studying Russian and Arabic. I’m working towards getting my Karate black belt in the next couple of years…
